Change is tough and the progress is often slower than we expect which can become discouraging. In Part One of this series, I wrote about some of the thoughts that I share with my clients when they are struggling to make progress towards their goals as quickly as they’d like. In today’s post, I’d like to share the wisdom of others.
I have compiled a list of quotes that I hope will help motivate you to continue working towards your goals even when you become discouraged by slow progress.
This first quote may get at the essence of the challenge we face when trying to make a change:
“Our dilemma is that we hate change and love it at the same time; what we really want is for things to remain the same but get better.” Sydney J. Harris
Here are some more quotes to ponder:
“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” Lao Tzu
“To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” Winston Churchill
“When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.” Confucius
“If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” Frederick Douglass
“The first step toward change is awareness. The second step is acceptance.” Nathaniel Branden
“Action and reaction, ebb and flow, trial and error, change – this is the rhythm of living. Out of our over-confidence, fear; out of our fear, clearer vision, fresh hope. And out of hope, progress.” Bruce Barton
“What is not started today is never finished tomorrow. ” Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
“Set your goals high, and don’t stop till you get there.” Bo Jackson
Do you have any favorite quotes about change or progress that I missed? Or perhaps some words of wisdom that you’ve shared with loved ones who appear discouraged by slow progress towards their goals? Please feel free to add them in the comments below.

The quote I have on my own blog is a briefer version of the original. Mine is simply stated: A journey begins with one step. The original is the one you mentioned above by Lao Tzo. I am bookmarking this post as I love all the quotes you have shared.
Julie, I am happy that these quotes connected with you!
